design advice

JTK.CA :: Advice on proper sizing of your photos for the web

Copyright © JONATHAN TAD KETCHEN (JTK.CA)

Dear Fellow Graphic Designers, Photographers, Artists, and Webmasters:

As most of you already know, I'm a perfectionist. Today, I decided to take some screen shots of Internet Explorer on my Apple iBook G4 at three different resolutions:

1024 x 768
800 x 600
640 x 480

I wanted to know "EXACTLY" how many pixels in an image would fit on an Internet Explorer page without having to scroll down or across a picture. Nothing is more frustrating than having a gigantic picture that has to be scrolled over to see the entire image; so designwise, I wanted to know exactly what dimension in pixels is the maximum width and height of images for each screen resolution, within an Internet Explorer window with all the toolbars open and the Apple Dock open at the bottom of the screen.

I'm sure no one needs to design for a 640 x 480 screen because that is caveman resolution, but I still wanted to know the dimensions for designing images for that outdated resolution. I'll just show you that particular screen shot, rather than the screen shots for all resolutions. Just realize even though it doesn't look like there would be much room on the page for web designing (and you would be right), at the 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 there is a lot more display area--and those larger resolutions are likely to be what you would be web designing for.

Here's the caveman 640 x 480 resolution:

640 x 480 REZ
603 x 275 CANVAS
583 x 255 IMAGE

REZ is the screen resolution.
CANVAS is the number of pixels that can be seen within an Internet Explorer window without having to scroll over the image.
IMAGE is the maximum width and height in pixels that any of your graphic designs or photos should have when viewing your work at this particular REZ. The audience doesn't need to worry about this. But you, as a web designer do, because you want your audience to have an uncomplicated surfing experience. Making images that are too big for the web browser window makes for frustrating and clumsy navigation that will probably turn viewers away, because it's too much trouble to scroll over an image to see the entire picture.

Again, I doubt very much you would design for 640 x 480 resolution because it's very limited in size and is hardly used anymore. I just used the image of it, and the explanation of the terms REZ, CANVAS, and IMAGE (above), so that you would understand the measurements below for the much more common (and larger) screen resolutions.

800 x 600 REZ (Some people may view your site on this medium resolution. Use these measurements only if you're worried about them.)
763 x 390 CANVAS
743 x 370 IMAGE

1024 x 768 REZ (The high resolution for which I design on my website http://NudistPoet.com)
989 x 564 CANVAS
969 x 544 IMAGE (This means that when I design any image for my website, it will never exceed 969 pixels wide or 544 pixels high. You might currently find some larger images, but none of my future ones will exceed these widths and heights.)

I hope this was educational to any fellow perfectionists out there.

Love in Christ
(the best kind),

I saw you today
A meeting by chance
And I hope I see you tomorrow

You've been where I've been
You know the scene
You're familiar with the sorrow

What can I say to you
To let you know these things I feel
Perhaps forever
They'll be shut with a seal
Infinity flustered
By a courage that was never mustered

SHADOW ILLUSION (Self-Portrait)

I took this photo while a student at Covenant College (www.covenant.edu), Lookout Mountain, Georgia, U.S.A., in the late 1980's. The shadow illusion involves two shadows on the ground. One is a shadow of a lamppost. The other shadow is of me with my arm outstretched. The illusion is that my hand is holding the lamppost, when the reality is my hand was actually grasping at air. I simply moved my hand until the shadows made it appear that I was grabbing the lamppost. The lamppost and I were not even in the same location; the sun was just casting long shadows for me to play with.
